Practitioners and attendees will learn about the medical barriers to caring for intellectually and developmentally disabled patients. In this two-day program, the presenters will provide an overview on diagnosis, a health-centered approach to treatment planning, transitional care, and creative partnerships to improve and achieve equitable care for people with intellectual disabilities. This interactive event will give attendees an opportunity to engage, learn and share ideas in smaller breakout groups.

A discussion of current efforts addressing healthcare disparities in this population and healthcare system reform will follow. We will explore what we need to change to repair a broken system from various industries. Advocates, self-advocates, direct support providers, insurance and other collaborative care partners in dentistry will participate in small group breakout sessions.

Upon attending this presentation, attendees will recognize and appreciate the complexity of life for patients with IDD, and the importance of providing comprehensive and compassionate care, both in the medical setting and the dental setting. Attendees will create some possible solutions moving forward.
