Many international students wish to take a Bar exam. McGeorge will work individually with those of you who interested in pursing that route. The two most common Bar that are of interest to international students are the New York Bar and the California Bar. Both have very different eligibility criteria. We recommend the students to familiarize themselves with the Bar admission and eligibility requirements in the particular jurisdiction they plan to practice.
As a McGeorge student you will have access to our Academic Support Programs, which offer special courses and resources year-long for those of you wish to take a Bar.
New York Bar
The eligibility requirements have recently changed. We will meet with each of you individually to tailor your course of study to meet the requirements of the Bar, and if applicable to "cure" the durational or substantive deficiency that many international students are faced with.
The New York State Board of Examiners requires all foreign educated law students to submit an Online Foreign Evaluation. It may take six to 12 months for the evaluation to be completed. Therefore, we highly recommend you to submit your evaluation before you start your studies at McGeorge, and as early as possible.
The eligibility requirements are listed here. Although the requirements are different, the application process is somewhat similar. You will also need to submit a foreign law degree evaluation. For the California Bar, such evaluation is done by a third party vendor. You can find the list of authorized vendors at the bottom of the page. This process may also be lengthy and we highly recommend you to submit your evaluation before you start your studies at McGeorge.
We will also work with you to tailor your course of study to meet the requirements of the Bar.
Note: We highly encourage you to read carefully the regulations for both Bars. The New York State Bar of Examiners and The State Bar of California are an independent entities from our law school, and make their own regulations and decisions. McGeorge has no professional affiliation with any Bar Examiners.
