California State Capitol Building

The University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law’s Capital Center for Law & Policy will bring together elected officials, scholars, and policy experts to discuss recent legislative developments related to environmental protection, electoral reform, and education. The Capital Center for Law & Policy will host its annual Legislative Leaders Speaker Series on Wednesday, March 8, 2023.

This year’s event, “Environmental Protection, Electoral Reform and Education: Addressing Systemic Inadequacy and Pushing for Progress,” will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. PT, in the Hugh & Hazel Darling Foundation Grand Salon at McGeorge School of Law and will be available via livestream. The moderated discussion will be followed by a hosted reception. The event is free and open to the public.

“McGeorge’s location in Sacramento at the hub of policy and politics in California provides our students with unparalleled access to the legislative and policy-making process,” said Erin O’Neal, Director of the Capital Center for Law & Policy. “Our annual Legislative Leaders Speaker Series allows our students to interact with California policymakers and become a part of the conversation on complex policy issues while in law school.”

The program will feature a keynote presentation by California Sen. Ben Allen, who represents the 24th Senate District, covering the Westside, Hollywood, South Bay, and Santa Monica Mountains communities of Los Angeles County. Allen has thrown himself into the important work of state government, focusing on wise decision-making and pushing for reforms that address systemic inadequacies in our state. He has authored nearly 60 new laws in various areas, from environmental protection to electoral reform. Allen chairs the Senate's Environmental Quality Committee and co-chairs the Legislature's Environmental Caucus, is a member of the Legislative Jewish Caucus, chairs the Legislature's Joint Committee on the Arts, and the Senate Select Committee on Aerospace and Defense.

The annual Legislative Leaders Speaker Series event is sponsored by the Capital Center for Law & Policy at McGeorge School of Law. McGeorge’s Environmental Law Society, Water Law Society, Capital Lawyering Association for Students, Jewish Law Students Association, and Public Policy & Administration Society are co-sponsoring the event.
